Hola a todos,

I teach High School Spanish and I’m trying my best to improve my student’s fluency. My Spanish II students have no problems describing themselves and people in general, talking about the weather, and describing pictures.

Does anybody have some ideas to work on their fluency in a fun way?

Muchas gracias!

I bought an interesting book the other day, “Games for Language Learning” by A. Wright, D. Betteridge and M. Buckby, that contains some activities that might be useful for you. There is one I tried the other day in class that I liked a lot, called “Liar!” (¡mentiroso!):

You need to find three pictures about topics you’ve talked about in class. Then you place them in empty folders, and you also put a blank sheet of paper in a fourth folder. That’s all the preparation you need.
Next, you give the folders to four volunteers, who have to describe those pictures to the rest of the class. The volunteer with the blank paper has to invent a convincing description of an imaginary picture in an attempt to fool the class.

Once they are done, the rest of the learners might ask them as many questions as they like in order to find out who is the “liar”. Finally, you can have the class voting individually or in groups who they think was the “liar”.

I had the students create scenes(large scenes) Mine are on large cardboard that can be stored easily: A bank, A restaurant, a grocery store, etc.

The students go and visit these places and use the services. Students are assigned roles.

I also created scenarios for the students in English and they were given three minutes to come up with a scene for it in spanish. ie: You see your boyfriend at the movies with another girl, how do you react?
You forgot your wallet at the restaurant and you have no money. etc.
